My Doctor

dw_ottawa comicconWhen anyone asks me which Doctor is my favorite I always go with the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker! I love watching all the incarnations of the Doctor, but I have such fond memories growing up in the late 70’s and discovering this odd fellow with an incredibly long scarf, traveling in something called a TARDIS. Needless to say, I was excited when the opportunity arose to work on this exclusive cover for the Ottawa Comic Con featuring the 4th Doctor!

Obviously I had to incorporate the Ottawa Parliament and other elements to make it Canadian, but I also wanted to find a way to work in the Jelly Babies. Somehow the idea to make the Jelly Babies Maple leaf shaped popped into my head and there you have it. Good luck finding one though, they were limited to 500 copies for VIP pass holders.

Prisoners of Time

dw_prisoners_of_time

If you need a reason to pick up issue #12 of Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time, then maybe this double-page spread will give you a taste of what’s waiting for you inside! All 11 Doctor’s in one time, one space. There’s also almost EVERY companion from the series in there as well.

It was great working on this last issue with Scott Tipton & David Tipton, Charlie Kirchoff and my editor, Denton Tipton! It felt a little like redemption for me after working on Doctor Who: The Forgotten #6. The deadline for that issue was terrible and I never felt like I did justice to Tony Lee’s script.

Hope you enjoy!

Deadwood Doc

doctorwho_deadwood_kellyyatesThis is the retailer variant cover for Doctor Who #14, quite possibly the last cover I’ll be doing for IDW’s Publishing run. Sad as that is, I feel blessed to be illustrating the final issue of Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time! More about that later!

For this Western inspired piece I wanted to go for something more tonal and pull in colors I don’t normally try. Orange and purple compliment each other so I thought that might be a great place to start and it just fell into place after that. Being able to lean on one or two colors that pull all the various elements together is one of my new and favorite techniques.

I also took this opportunity to incorporate my wife and kids’ names into the background. Hopefully, the kids’ will appreciate it someday!

Yee-Haw!

Wibbly~Wobbly, Timey-Wimey

doctor_amy pondThis is a commission I did of the 10th Doctor and Amy Pond that I was suppose to have finished at Baltimore Comic Con 2012. Unfortnately, I ran out of time at the show and had to bring it home to finish. Which means, back-burner. Sad, but true. When I was first asked to combine Amy and the 10th Doctor, I had to triple-check that’s they actually wanted since Amy only traveled with the 11th Doctor. However, being Doctor Who, wibbly~wobbly, timey-wimey, it could certainly happen.

Mission accomplished, I think!

7th Doctor

DW_DragonCon_7th DoctorWhenever I get to meet an actor that played the Doctor, I like to create an exclusive print to sell at the show and then present the original artwork and color print to them. Well, this time it’s going to be Sylvester McCoy! This piece seemed to take longer to complete because I didn’t realize his outfit had so many patterns and textures than any of the other Doctor’s, even the 6th Technicolor jacket. Anyway, I think was able to capture his likeness and I was able to add another Doctor illustration to the pantheon.

If you’re interested in picking up any of my prints, I’ll be set-up somewhere in DragonCon’s Artist Alley.

DragonCon Auction

dw_dragonconDragonCon 2013 is just around the corner and I’m excited to be attending for the first time since 1990. Needless to say, the show’s grown a little bit and I’ve become a Professional Artist during that span of time.

Since I’m attending as a guest I’m going to provide an item for their charity auction, so I decided to create this original 11×17 penciled and inked piece of the 11th Doctor in his latest outfit. If you’re attending DragonCon or know someone who is, please let them know that this piece will be up for auction during the show. Proceeds from the 2013 Charity Auction will benefit Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, Georgia Conservancy, and Marcus Autism Center.

Exclusive Newbury Comics Cover

doctor who_newburyThis is the exclusive cover to Doctor Who #11 that I illustrated for Newbury Comics. It was the first time I got to draw the new companion, Clara Oswald and the Doctor’s updated costume so that was fun. I think using the contrast between the vintage photo and the clean, crisp, blue wood of the TARDIS really worked and made this cover unique to some of the other ones I worked on. If you’d like to purchase a copy you can do so HERE.

I’ll have a few more covers to post in the next few weeks, but that’ll probably be it for Doctor Who. While at SDCC, I learned that IDW Publishing no longer has the license to produce Doctor Who comics. Obviously I was saddened by this news because I love working on Doctor Who and with my editor, Denton, at IDW.

Prisoners of Time concept

DW-conceptI’ve been working on several Doctor Who covers lately, so when I was asked to come up with a concept for Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time I was excited because it would have been for ALL 12 covers of the series. Each issue was going to spotlight a specific Doctor, so issue #1 would feature Doctor #1, issue #2 ~ Doctor #2, etc. My plan was to have the Doctor prominent in the foreground, behind him would be all the companions that travelled with that specific Doctor and the TARDIS. The background characters would have been tonal color scheme so you could see them while still making the Doctor the main focus. Then, issue #12 would flip so that the TARDIS was the main focus and the Doctors would be surrounding it instead of the companions. Unfortunately, the project didn’t happen and I was of course, a little disappointed. Too bad, it would have been a cool series of covers.

Anyway, tune in after San Diego Comic Con for a sneak peek of more new artwork. Speaking of SDCC, I’ll be signing at IDW (booth #2643), Saturday (7/20) from 3-4pm along with Tony Lee, Andy Kuhn, Josh Fialkov, Scott Tipton, David Tipton. Please come visit and let me know you saw it on my site!

Time for a Change

Welcome to my new little spot on the web! I finally decided (after observing mankind viewing more and more material on their phones and tablets) to redesign my personal website to be mobile friendly. Time for a change, I thought.

You can still view my old site via the link at the top of the page, but come back here in a few days for new posts.
